Iggy Pop - AFTER (10th Anniversary)
Description
Deified during his lifetime by the press, which for four decades has capitulated to his evidence, adored by an audience that now only travels in droves to see him, once again, stride and rock stages that didn't ask for so much, godfather, almost in spite of himself, of alternative trends that he himself has decapitated, with a bite, at each rebirth, Iggy Pop is better than an artist on the breach. He is the breach.
Since " Preliminaries ", we know that Iggy can express himself in other ways than by roaring on guitars that rain down splinters, than by making the powder howl. All he needs is the desire to do so. Dictated solely by his artistic aspirations, intact, and driven by a vital need to get to the point, his line of conduct led him to record, under French, artistic and heartfelt influence, the ten songs of this "Après" that rhymes with his present.
With these covers of "La vie en rose", "Everybody's Talking", "Syracuse", "Michelle" or "Et si tu n'existais pas" Iggy is not trying to prove anything. He simply directs the other side of his personality towards the light, and lets others guess which one is the darkest. Far from wild rhythms, and on the surface of feelings that he has chosen to express differently. "Après" deserves to resonate, loud and clear, and therefore differently.
With a voice as beautiful as it is deep, and which stirs the guts, Iggy Pop takes these classics, cuts them to his size and guarantees the thrill. Would he have buried his hatchet? Nothing is less certain. There is in the elegance of these arrangements which do not betray, and catapult the songs towards the essential, a conviction more dangerous than any weapon!
