The connection between jazz and hip hop is often thought of as a one-way street. Producers dig through crates, sample jazz recordings, and build loops for rappers to rhyme around. Keith Edward Elam, also known as Guru, truly understood the powerful connection between the two genres with Jazzmatazz.
Guru was best known for being one half of the rapper-producer duo Gang Starr. Delivering intelligent, battle-ready lyrics with a smooth delivery. Alongside DJ Premier, they created some of the smoothest and hardest-hitting East Coast rap of the '90s. However, Guru's solo career really showcased his lifelong love of hip hop and jazz. His ambition to tightly fuse the two genres in a cohesive way.
After his success with Gang Starr , Guru set his sights on his first solo album. However, he didn't fully embrace the sound that earned him his following. Instead, he experimented even further with jazz - the result was Jazzmatazz Vol.1.
